Creating Your First Information Product: It’s Easier Than You Think!

Creating your first information product should not be a difficult job. My first tip is to create your product around something you already know. Why do I say this? Because it’s easier, quicker, and more enjoyable when you’re writing about a topic that you’re familiar with.

For example, if you wanted to write an instruction guide on how to make origami, but didn’t know how to make it yourself, it would be very difficult to write about it. Whereas if you enjoyed making it and you knew the exact steps, it would be easy and quick to do because you have the experience and are passionate about it.

Don’t make it harder or more complicated than it has to be. By choosing a topic in which you already have experience, are interested in and excited about, you’ll be able to create your info product easily.

If you’ve already figured out what people want to know about in your niche, a great place to start is to think back to when you first started in your business. What questions or challenges did you have? If you’re not yet in your own business, then what are you passionate about? What hobbies do you have? Ask yourself what solutions you were looking for.

Suppose you’re in the business of making and selling beaded jewelry. Some questions might be:

  • Where is the best place to buy the assorted beads?
  • How can I make my own?
  • What are the best methods to clean them?
  • Are some beads better quality than others?
  • How can I start my own bead jewelry business?

I’ve just asked five questions, and immediately we’ve got topics that we can break up into paragraphs or chapters for a how-to guide or a special report. Straight away, those five questions become your headings for your info product.

In this case, you can pass on your business knowledge to teach others how to start their own bead jewelry business, tips about the various beads, how to make an assortment of styles, as well as basic things they need to know about how to get their business off the ground.

You could even add a special resource sheet, listing all the suppliers of the beads, and even outlets where the jewelry could be sold. This basic information could then be fleshed out some more and broken into a step by step ecourse, and divided into different lessons that teach others how to make the best bead jewelry.

Remember, once your course is written and your visitor has signed up for the course, your autoresponder system takes over and the lessons get delivered on a schedule which you set up. All this is done on autopilot.

Part of the information that you’ve put together can be given away, such as a tip sheet on The Best Methods for Cleaning Bead Jewelry. This tip sheet could be given as a bonus to visitors who sign up for the ecourse or your newsletter.

The beauty of this is that you would now have their data and can continue to market to them and to promote your products, and they can become familiar with your work, as they will be receiving the ecourse over time.

At the same time, you’re building trust and nurturing your relationship with these people. As they continue to get good content from you, they’ll come back to your site and be more receptive to learn more from you, because you’ve built up that relationship with quality.

These returning customers are the foundation of your higher end product sales, so you can continue this process of creating good products for them based on what they’re buying, and find ways to ask them what else they would like.

Invite comments on your blog, or invite your customers to email you with questions so you can become very familiar with what their struggles or questions are. These areas are where your next information products can come from.

Now that I’ve walked you through an example of how to quickly and easily create your first info product, you can apply the system to your business and areas of expertise.
